Pause Practice
Create space between stimulus and response
Why Pause Matters
In difficult conversations, our natural tendency is to react immediately when we feel threatened, criticized, or emotional. The pause gives you time to:
- Regulate your emotional response
- Choose a thoughtful response instead of reacting
- Access your prefrontal cortex for better decision-making
Breathing Exercise
4-4-6 breathing pattern for emotional regulation
Breathe In
How to Use This in Conversations
Before the Conversation
Practice this breathing exercise to calm your nervous system and prepare mentally.
During the Conversation
When you feel triggered, take a brief pause. Even 3-5 seconds of conscious breathing can help you respond more effectively.
Verbal Pauses
Use phrases like "Let me think about that for a moment" or "That's an important point, give me a second to consider it" to create space.
